Periods, Culture and Confidence: Why the Conversation Matters

Getting your first period is a natural milestone in growing up. But for many young girls, it can come with questions, uncertainty and feelings they don’t quite know how to express.

What is happening to my body? Is this normal? Who can I talk to?

These are conversations worth having, and they shouldn’t begin only when a girl gets her first period.

At TidzBiz, we believe education, cultural connection and open conversations can help young girls approach menstruation with greater confidence, understanding and pride.

Breaking the Silence Around Periods

Menstruation is a normal part of life, yet conversations about periods can still feel uncomfortable.

For some young girls, embarrassment or a lack of information can make it difficult to ask questions or seek support.

That’s why creating safe, supportive environments for these conversations matters.

When young people have access to accurate, age-appropriate information, they’re better equipped to understand the changes happening to their bodies and recognise when they might need additional support.

Period education isn’t just about understanding a menstrual cycle.

It’s about building confidence, encouraging body awareness and helping young girls feel comfortable speaking about their health.

Culture, Connection and Growing Up

For TidzBiz founders Bo and Jade, cultural identity and community connection are important parts of the vision behind the brand.

For First Nations girls, conversations about growing up can provide opportunities to connect with family, culture and community.

We recognise that cultural knowledge, traditions and experiences differ between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

That’s why listening, respecting cultural knowledge and supporting community-led conversations are so important.

Families, Elders, carers and trusted community members can all play valuable roles in helping young girls navigate the transition through puberty.

Our vision is to support these conversations through practical resources and education that respect the communities and individuals they are created for.

Confidence Begins With Understanding

Imagine approaching your first period already knowing what to expect.

Knowing what products are available, how to use them and who you can turn to when you have questions.

For young girls, this preparation can make an unfamiliar experience feel more manageable.

We believe menstrual education should help girls:

  • Understand the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty.

  • Learn about different menstrual products and how to use them safely.

  • Feel comfortable asking questions about their bodies.

  • Recognise that menstrual experiences can differ from person to person.

  • Know where to seek support when something doesn’t feel right.

Most importantly, education should reinforce a simple message: there is nothing shameful about having a period.

Supporting the People Who Support Our Girls

Young girls don’t navigate these experiences alone.

Parents, carers, educators, health professionals and community organisations all have opportunities to provide reassurance, information and practical support.

But starting these conversations isn’t always easy.

Sometimes it’s about finding the right words. Other times, it’s about having accessible resources that help explain what’s happening in a way young people can understand.

TidzBiz is developing educational resources alongside our period kits to help support these conversations.

Our aim is to create practical opportunities for learning, connection and confidence, whether that’s at home, at school or within community programs.

Creating Change Through Conversation

We believe meaningful change often begins with a conversation.

One that encourages curiosity instead of embarrassment.

Understanding instead of uncertainty.

And confidence instead of shame.

Through TidzBiz, we’re working towards a future where young girls feel informed, prepared and supported as they experience the changes that come with growing up.

Because period education is about more than understanding menstruation.

It’s about helping young girls understand their bodies, feel confident in themselves and know they have people around them who care.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

TidzBiz is currently connecting with schools, health organisations, community groups and individuals interested in supporting menstrual education and access to period essentials.

Whether you’re looking to support young girls in your community or learn more about our developing resources, we’d love to hear from you.
